Business and the Right Culture

For years, I’ve found myself drawn to Sorrento, a place that feels like a home away from home.

Business and the right culture

Christmas in Sorrento has become a cherished tradition. Each year, we return to the same spot, a place that feels like the heart of Sorrento. It’s where the locals gather, where families and friends reconnect over wine and a delicious piece of pezatino di pizza.

What makes this place so special isn’t just the food or the wine, it’s the people and the culture they embody. You witness it in the warmth of their greetings, the countless hugs and kisses exchanged, and the animated hand gestures that bring their conversations to life. These gestures aren’t just a way to communicate; they’re a deeply ingrained part of the Sorentinian identity, something learned from birth.

The culture here is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. It often reminds me of the Italian-American depictions in classic Cosa Nostra films, where love, respect, and loyalty are paramount. But this isn’t a cinematic exaggeration; it’s real. The way people express themselves with open arms and open hearts, has made this region feel like my second home. It’s why I know I’ll return every Christmas, year after year.

Reflecting on Sorrento’s culture, I see parallels to how successful businesses thrive. Like a close-knit community, businesses need to establish a strong culture, one built on clear values, rituals, and practices. Just as a Sorentinian learns their unique gestures and traditions from birth, employees must adopt and embody the culture of a business.

Creating such an environment isn’t always easy. It requires intentionality, consistency, and a willingness to help others embrace your vision. But as I’ve learned from my time in Sorrento, when people truly connect to a shared culture, the results are extraordinary. It fosters loyalty, respect, and a sense of belonging that can elevate a business, or a community to incredible heights.

Sorrento has shown me that culture isn’t just about tradition; it’s about building something lasting, something people want to return to again and again.

And whether in business or life, that’s a lesson worth cherishing.
